Judith Leyster

Dutch Golden Age painter of lively taverns, musicians and candlelit genre scenes.

  • Intimate
  • Vibrant
  • Labor & Domesticity

Fun fact

Her work was misattributed to Frans Hals for centuries until a forged signature exposed the mistake in 1893.

How she made it

Alla prima oil in the Haarlem manner: a monochrome underpainting, then swift loaded strokes that stay visible, with candlelight scenes built from a warm ground and sparing white impasto for the flame.
