United States · 1855–1942

Cecilia Beaux

Portraitist of Gilded Age society, painting with sweeping, confident strokes.

  • Intimate
  • Monumental
  • Self-Representation

Fun fact

She was the first woman to hold a full-time teaching post at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.

How she made it

Bravura oil portraiture: a fluid, thinned lay-in followed by broad loaded brushwork on the head, backgrounds kept sketchy so the sitter's face carries all the finish. She painted standing, stepping back constantly to judge the whole.
